Iisa / As One (QCinema 2015)
Directed by: Chuck Gutierrez
This movie shows the aftermath of a typhoon calamity to an oppressed community.
Nasalanta sila ng bagyo. Walang matirahan at walang makain.
The conversations feel isolated with each other. They were presented in pieces — with no strong bond to put them together. The characters are broken but not open. You cannot see beneath them for you to empathize with them.
The cinematography speaks too much — that it overpowers the presence of the characters. The gorgeous elements in this movie, such as the rain and fire, felt more real than the lives of the people. The rain falling from the clouds induces more tears. The bonfire has more warmth. You can feel the fire serving as light for the characters which lack their own sparkle.
The cinematography served as the main foundation of this movie; whereas the character story became an on-and-off background. These two elements should’ve joined hands in telling a story, but they failed to merge as one.
