BAR BOYS MUSICAL ARETE

This marks the third run of Bar Boys musical, but it’s the first time it’s being staged on a big venue. From 300 seats to 800 seats, this major upgrade serves as a testament of how successful the musical is based on their previous run.

Before, the intimate space allows you to feel the scenes because you’re inches closer to the actors. Seeing their faces and reactions can enhance the theater experience. Now, the larger staging tends to put the spotlight on grander props and moving set pieces.

For a while, you’ll get amazed by the production design. They have their own 𝘸𝘰𝘸 moments in the show. But the moments that really count are the ones that feel personal and sincere.

One that stood out was the 𝘌𝘷𝘦𝘳𝘺𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘛𝘰𝘥𝘢𝘺 act. It’s a shared memory coming together to create an uplifting and highly spirited experience. It’s always a good feeling when the characters share positive updates about their lives, bringing optimism to the crowd.

Suited for big crowd, Jerom Canlas’ loud voice and mannerisms can resonate up to the backseat of the theater. Omar Uddin has the charm. Alex Diaz and Benedix Ramos bring in the emotions. These four leads can definitely act. But most of the time, the ensemble and supporting cast can easily take over the scenes.

Gio Gahol puts his own spin to the character. His enthusiasm on stage is contagious. Denize Castillo’s funny antics are effective. Sheila Francisco commands attention everytime. Lacking the necessary sinister presence, Nor Domingo’s performance is underwhelming.

You won’t get tired of Natasha Cabrera and Carlon Matobato, as they bring something new to the table every time they’re on stage. Despite having multiple roles, they don’t let their energy get divided—always at hundred percent in giving entertainment.

Some dance numbers don’t flow well with the play. The opening is too long, yet it doesn’t quite capture the essence of a student’s life. It takes a while to get you on board, leading to a lot of downtime.

Most songs don’t have a recall. Connection to the scenes can easily get lost due to several side plots being inserted. Given the large venue, it’s noticeable when the stage is bare. The intimacy is hard to establish.

It’s good whenever cast members are encouraging participation from the audience. When they speak to the people, that’s when it gets powerful—-‘d they have enough of those moments. With everything they’ve done, it’s just about right to let this musical pass the bar.

𝑩𝑨𝑹 𝑩𝑶𝒀𝑺: 𝑻𝑯𝑬 𝑴𝑼𝑺𝑰𝑪𝑨𝑳 runs from October 24 to November 23, 2025 at the Hyundai Hall, Areté, Ateneo in Quezon City. Tickets are available on Ticket2Me or bit.ly/barboystickets. Prices range from Php999 to Php3499
