COME FROM AWAY

The story is good.
But the storytelling isn’t.
Gripping at first, the show eventually become stale—consistently throwing information with less creativity. Instead of showing what’s happening, narrators keep on talking. The distribution of songs and dialogues is not balanced.
The narrative approach is leaning towards docu-reporting than theater dramatization. This reporting style is getting repetitive through out the show, making the direction flat.
The stage design is underwhelming. A lot is going on with the characters, but the visuals don’t match with the chaos and restlessness of their situation.
Transitions aren’t smooth. The large number of characters prevent them to provide a cohesive journey you can cling onto.
The ensemble gives decent acting. Despite struggling vocally, Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo’s performance manages to take off and leave a mark. Her words remain clear, sincere and understandable—even if her accent shifts throughout the show.
Accents from some other cast members are distracting—taking the attention away from the emotions they are trying to convey.
Characters can’t make a lasting connection. Moments are fleeting. Laughters only last for a second. Most songs are forgettable. One thing remains memorable, though, is the story.
Humanity exists, regardless of circumstances, and this show aims to keep that essence alive.
You’ll come to this musical for the story.
But then again, the storytelling pulls you away.
