GOAT (2026)
Directed by: Tyree Dillihay

Using animals as symbols for people and dreams isn’t something new. Among recent animated films, 𝘡𝘰𝘰𝘵𝘰𝘱𝘪𝘢 easily comes to mind—with the key difference that the story centers on basketball.
The basketball matches take place in a venue that is constantly shifting and in motion, adding an extra layer of challenge to the game. It would have been nice if this feature were emphasized further by letting the players actively strategize on how to overcome these obstacles.
However, it’s underutilized, just floating around in the background without a big influence on the gameplay. As a result, what could have been a defining feature ends up as a missed opportunity.
The team members come across as decorative characters, added mainly for visual color. Their personalities are mostly defined by stereotypes rather than meaningful characterization. Because their backgrounds are barely explored, it becomes difficult to fully appreciate their individual skills or connect with them on a deeper level.
Sometimes, the audio dubbing compensates for these shortcomings. The voice performances bring life to the scenes. You can almost imagine a real person behind each character as they speak.
From passing to shooting, the animation reflects its love for the sport through the way each movement and item is visualized. The ball with holes is a cute, thoughtful detail that reinforces inclusivity, letting anyone fit their hands in and be part of the game.
The destination is clear from the very beginning. The journey remains focused without long detours. At the center of the narrative is always the main character. His steady determination, paired with a story faithful to its themes, guides the film exactly where it intends to go.
𝘎𝘖𝘈𝘛 may not be the greatest when it comes to writing and storytelling. But it does a good job of shooting valuable lessons while keeping its eye on the prize.
