RETURN TO SILENT HILL

Return to Silent Hill (2026)

Directed by: Christophe Gans

The movie has certain visuals and POV angles that mirror video game perspectives. To some extent, it helps recreate the PlayStation gaming experience. But overall, it makes the monsters look fake, reducing their ability to elicit fear.

With so many creatures appearing, it’s easy to become desensitized to them. They appear and disappear without warning. While the difficulty level increases from easy to hard, the battles happen too quickly. As a result, the opportunity to highlight their distinct qualities is missed.

The transitions initially look cool and smooth. But over time, the frequent flashbacks become distracting. The narrative drags and takes too long to establish what’s going on. When the plot is finally revealed, much of the initial momentum has already faded. Your energy has also been depleted.

The jumpscares aren’t enough to shake you to your core. With no outlet to release all the negative emotions, the terror remains locked inside. This restraint carries through to the ending. The conclusion is tragic, yet it serves as a fitting way to end the film.

The scares may not provoke screams,

but they have the ability to linger in silence.
