Bugonia (2025)
Directed by: Yorgos Lanthimos

When someone says there’s an alien,
would you believe them?
No matter which angle you’re looking from, it’s hard to believe the existence of aliens in this film. But the actors are so committed with their performances, you can’t help but give them the benefit of the doubt. Plot holes, even though recognizable, also need to be set aside.
Detaching yourself from assumptions and preconceived notions, you lend an ear to what they’re saying. The more you listen, the more you understand them. Alien entities and recognizable experiences are now consuming the same space.
Every conversation is so rich and emotional, peeling away the outer layers of the characters to reveal what’s inside.
There's a dynamic two-way communication, with a constant push and pull as each side seeks leverage whenever possible. You can’t pick a side since both are bringing valuable information to the table. From a place of disbelief, you suddenly find yourself in the middle of two opposing views.
You can’t keep track on who’s leading the argument. The battle is so unpredictable that it can go either way. When the main player makes a move, it is met with an equal counteraction from the opponent. They always end up on the same footing, making an ironic chaotic balance.
Whichever direction they are heading to, there’s a message to be found. As the film highlights the power of communication, the ending might seem disempowering.
Through all of its conspiracies and complexities, the film still excels at dialogues that foster understanding on different perspectives—even if it’s difficult to find a common ground.
