FINDING SANTOS

Finding Santos (2025)

Directed by: Son Hyeon-woo

Led by a Korean actor and a Filipino actress, the film centers on finding a man named Santos here in the Philippines.

There’s a conscious effort to share some Filipino culture and traditions, both the admirable and the flawed. Korean actors get the chance to immerse themselves and experience our culture firsthand. The tribute to Filipino veterans is also appreciated, although it could've been integrated more organically. The emphasis on it only comes in the last few minutes.

Lacking emotions and facial expressions, the main leads are a letdown. Their apathetic performance makes it tough to invest in their journey. The bit actors are also unconvincing. None of the cast seems serious and sincere. There’s no sense of urgency and importance to whatever they’re doing.

The supporting cast are the ones trying to save the movie. Hans Galendez and Park Seong-in elevate the scenes with their consistently high energy.

Whenever there’s a problem, a convenient solution is being handed to them. They can effortlessly secure information, accommodation, and transportation—even though it’s difficult to achieve. The ease, in which they navigate challenges, feels unearned and implausible.

The pacing is off, failing to build anticipation towards their destination. The sloppy look of the movie gives the impression of limited shooting time and resources. The musical scoring is disruptive. The songs aren't bad, but their abrupt insertion into the scenes diminishes their beauty.

The movie's setup for a sequel is anticlimactic. Oddly enough, it still keeps you interested on their next adventure. But instead of 𝘍𝘪𝘯𝘥𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘚𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘰𝘴, the movie should first focus on finding a better script and direction.
