GODZILLA MINUS ZERO
Godzilla Minus Zero (2026)
Written & Directed by: Takashi Yamazaki

The first act is all talking. It seems unfitting because you enter the cinema expecting all-out action. Godzilla and Ghidorah aren’t exactly the main stars of the show, but they give you something more to cheer for.
The film is committed to developing its characters. As you learn more about them, the impending war starts to carry more weight. When people’s lives are at stake, you value each step and take time to strategize before going berserk and harming others.
The monsters look thick, but the characters have more layers to them. Beneath the fictional setting lies a reality check on how leaders decide on war-related matters. Decisions made at every level have a domino effect.
There are moments when the characters face dilemmas that make them richer. They have the power to help, but must choose what to do with it.
There are hasty resolutions at the end that seem inconsistent with the film’s slow pace. But it’s all for the better, as they move the story forward and explore the idea of war in greater depth.
With all the atrocities happening across nations, it feels like humanity keeps going back to zero. But if more people could look beyond the monster and see what truly matters, there might be a chance to rise above zero.
