Mahjong Nights (2021)
Directed by: Lawrence Fajardo
Dalawang klaseng manlalaro
Sean de Guzman didn’t have much to contribute aside from his sex scenes. Jamilla Obispo lacks conviction and credibility for her role.
Jay Manalo delivered above all the characters. He can instill fear and command respect. His presence is intimidating.
The first half of the movie had a good flow wherein you’d gradually meet each of the characters. The cinematography is decent. The atmosphere is inviting.
You are welcome to join their Mahjong club.
Arnell Ignacio constantly lifts the mood everytime it falters. He randomly chimes in with his banters, making funny moments. It was good while it lasted.
On the latter part of the movie, the scenes had nowhere to go. Things happen out of thin air. Conversations are abrupt. Characters have no deeper sense of purpose. The screenplay is weak enough to let the story go sideways.
The ending exists because there’s nothing more to show.
Mahjong Nights turned out to be one of those forgettable nights.
