MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE - THE FINAL RECKONING

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning

Directed by: Christopher McQuarrie

At this point in time, Ethan Hunt has proven himself capable of anything. Whether he jumps on a plane or delves into a submarine, although impressive, it’s not shocking anymore.

His missions are becoming repetitive and boring, starting out seemingly impossible but ultimately becoming possible. The thrill is wearing off.

Heavily relying on the legacy of its predecessors, this latest movie lacks the elements that make the franchise successful. Unfortunately, the magic has been depleted and lost.

The direction is dragging and dry—stretching scenes to an unnecessary length. 2 hours and 49 minutes of runtime is not worth the watch. The last few scenes are the only saving grace, whereas the hours leading to the ending are weak and desensitizing.

Intensity easily breaks. Transitions aren’t smooth. One minute, it’s exciting. The next minute, it’s gone. There’s no sense of urgency with what’s happening. The countdown timer is a total joke.

Too much repetitive exposition. The delivery of lines are unnaturally theatrical and synchronized. Dialogues are stuck in a loop, with characters endlessly discussing each other’s thoughts and motivations. The script offers a narrow and limited perspective on AI by fixating on its destructive potential.

The antagonist doesn’t have a strong presence and a solid story that you can hold onto, making him truly undeserving of the spot. You couldn’t care less if the protagonist is gonna live or die. You just want it to be over.

Whether the mission is to revitalize or culminate the franchise, it’s impossible to achieve it through this movie. After years of existence, 𝘔𝘪𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘰𝘯 𝘐𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘴𝘪𝘣𝘭𝘦 faces cold reckoning. Its reliance on nostalgia is no longer sufficient to mask its shortcomings.

Brace yourself for exhaustion instead of exhilaration

— should you choose to watch it.
