Moana 2 (2024)
Directed by: David Derrick Jr.,
Jason Hand & Dana Ledoux Miller
How far will this movie go
just to make an unnecessary sequel?
Even if there’s no imminent problem, the characters keep making one. The threats and challenges are not to be taken seriously, because the solutions are conveniently showing in front of them whenever wherever. Instant miracles happen because the writers make it happen.
Having a weak and incohesive direction, the movie has a flow of raging waters. It’s not smooth. It’s not gripping. Additional events and characters are forcefully being inserted just to make the movie longer. Characters, both protagonists and antagonists, lack deeper motives with the things that they’re doing.
Moana recruited new members to be part of the mission, and they don’t have any sense of camaraderie. Each of them showed their expertise but it’s not remarkable. The songs are forgettable too, most especially the main theme song.
The parents’ love for Moana seems superficial. There’s not enough scenes to show their bond as a family. Nonetheless, their tribe and its culture are more seen this time. The scenes are also more cinematic.
Beautiful visuals are being projected to attract people and also distract them from the weak storytelling. Unfortunately, the latter is more visible.
Moana 2 is a let-down in almost all elements. Going beyond feels contrived. They don’t need to go far away since the fixing should start from within.
