Primetime (2026)

Directed by: Lance Oppenheim

Like a TV with too many channels, this film keeps switching between too many voices until it loses its own.

The main host of the show is dealing with his own problems and conflicts of interest, yet these issues are never fully addressed. Even though he’s the lead character, it’s difficult to know more about him or understand his state of mind.

Addicted to his dreams, the decoy character can remain sober and sensible about the situation around him. That contrast makes him a nuanced character worth dissecting, yet the film fails to do such a thing. His mental health and aspirations are left unexplored, even though both could have made for a meaningful discussion about who he is and what drives him.

Merritt Wever is remarkable, giving a consistently composed performance. She can unleash her anger without having to raise her voice. There’s clearly more to her role as a producer. Unfortunately, little is revealed about her life and the principles that shape her decisions.

Even though the predators don’t deserve a platform, examining their perspective could have added more layers to the story. But regardless of whose voice is speaking, whether it belongs to the victim or someone else, the film never seems to listen or make something out of it.

Inspired by true events, the film ironically struggles to bring its characters to life, stripping away their souls and offering little insight into who they are.

People are treated like channels, easily switched from one to another. Lacking voice and soul, 𝘗𝘳𝘪𝘮𝘦𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦 gives more reasons to tune out than to stay tuned.
