The documentary starts off with news about PCol Hansel Marantan, painting him as a killer than a police officer. Then the next scenes are a series of interviews that try to put him on a pedestal.

Positive testimonials are overwhelming. Most of the interviewees are on his side. There’s not enough balance in telling both sides of the story.

Too many cases, places, jargons and names are being said—without proper introduction. Having a themesong is unnecessary. The editing lacks precision and style in presenting the timeline and text descriptions.

Marantan’s formative years are shown but on a surface level only. The reasons and motives of becoming a policeman could’ve been explored to further establish his character. The shift from a place of worship into a battlefield is abrupt.

A war of words is taking place among Marantan, other people and the media, yet words are cheap without sufficient evidence. Amidst the back and forth accusations, Marantan being a law enforcer remains to be a standout.

Marantan’s commitment in upholding the law and taking down criminals is consistent throughout this narrative. Regardless of the enemy’s rank or influence, call of duty comes first.

Despite having a tough stance on crime, he is able to build connections with some detainees—indicating that there’s a room for empathy and understanding.

With the sources and materials presented, there’s no denying that he has the qualities and credentials for the role. Sometimes, the documentary comes across as a propaganda. But overall, it succeeds in opening a topic worthy of disucssion.

Having a straightforward reporting style and subtle reenactments, the documentary poses stimulating questions and relevant observations. The title fittingly summarizes the whole narrative.

In this era where anyone can easily be cancelled or tainted as evil, let’s make it habit to search for the truth behind every action.

There’s more beneath the surface.

Sa likod ng tsapa, may naitatagong istorya.

Harapin natin ang mga istoryang pilit nilalagay sa likod.
