Strange Frequencies (MMFF 2024)
Directed by: Kerwin Go
Having watched 516 Filipino Movies over the last five years, 𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘴 is a breath of fresh air by delivering quality horror entertainment to the table.
It’s not revolutionary by global standards. But when talking about local cinema alone, this is already a major and notable achievement.
The jumpscares are well-executed. They’re not the scariest, but they don’t look cheap. Most of them happen unexpectedly, increasing their shock value. The horrifying elements are scarce. But when it appears, it counts.
Despite the typical story, the flow is well-structured. There’s a fun and playful atmosphere since the beginning. The acting feels authentic.
No awkwardness detected among the cast members. Their rapport is seamless. No forced interactions. Whenever an issue or controversy is thrown at them, you’d wonder if it’s all true.
As the head of the team, Enrique Gil acts accordingly. Jane De Leon delivers. Raf Pineda’s banters are natural and funny. MJ Lastimosa is good at teasing people. Rob Gomez is fine. The serious vibe of Zarckaroo complements the scenes. Alexa Miro is both convincing and entertaining with whatever she’s doing.
The film’s technicalities are all impressive. It has a clean editing, creepy sound, and eerie prod design. There are different camera set-ups, but you won’t get dizzy looking at them. The visual and audio elements blend seamlessly.
The way this film wraps up is cool and unexpected. The ending perfectly aligns with the story’s message.
Hindi sobrang nakakatakot, pero nakakakilabot. Strange sabihin, pero nakaka-proud siyang panuorin. Kaya pala natin gumawa ng ganitong klase ng pelikula.
Imagine the frequency of game-changing movies
if more people took risks.
𝘚𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘨𝘦 𝘍𝘳𝘦𝘲𝘶𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘪𝘦𝘴 is totally worth it.
