STRAW

Straw (2025)

Written & Directed by: Tyler Perry

Your heart tells you to empathize with the situation. But your mind says that the script relies heavily on deliberate poverty porn and excessive trauma dumping.

This is like Final Destination

but it only happens to one character.

Bombarding with cruel circumstances, the movie tries so hard to convert the protagonist into a martyr. What remains in the end is a suspect who seems guilty of all possible charges they can think of.

Taraji Henson slays the role. The commitment of Teyana Taylor is evident and consistent throughout. Sherri Sheperd brings a sense of stability and composure to the situation.

The supporting characters try to make the plot more believable—by asking relevant questions to ground the narrative. However, no compelling discussion comes after.

The story is gripping. Sticking to it means continuously hoping for something to develop and prosper afterwards. However, it ends up having a weak conclusion to the chaos they’ve made.

Like a straw, the movie sips every misfortune in life and dumps them all to the main character—drowning on a nonstop melodrama narrative.
