Wicked (2024)
Directed by: Jon Chu
It takes a long while for you to get invested with the story and its characters. The first hour of the movie is dull and unexciting, making you feel that the total running time of 2hrs and 40mins is not justifiable. The challenges and struggles of Elphaba are not translated well on the big screen.
Effective and lovable, Ariana Grande gave life and laughter to most scenes. Her naivety and charm are put into good use. Her acting performance is very natural, but her theatrical voice can sound unnatural sometimes. Complementing her energy are Bowen Yang and Bronwyn James. Listening to Marissa Bode’s voice is captivating.
The mood of the film significantly changes when the two main characters finally find connection with one another. That special moment was silent but deadly, shooting you right through the heart. From then on, the scenes and songs started to have bearing. The musical scoring is also more affecting.
You’re becoming attached to the characters. You’re slowly appreciating the little things—no matter how whimsical or pure it can be.
The final act is literally screaming
“save the best for last!”
During this time, the set design is at its most vibrant form. The production numbers are more powerful and alive. Merry and sentimental are words to describe the appearance of some valuable characters. Cinematography starts to give a heart-stopping effect. The team-up of Ariana & Cynthia exudes not only voices in unison but also friendship in harmony.
The most anticipated “Defying Gravity” moment is worth the wait. It’s beautiful how the song is stretched into parts to emphasize the lyrics and to create more dramatic moments. The gravity of every word is felt. The defiance is strong. Cynthia Erivo finally showed what she’s really capable of—and she didn’t disappoint.
The movie had a rough start, but the ending was a home run. The last few minutes is gripping, applaudable and emotionally satisfying. There’s no other way to end it but this one. You’ll definitely yearn for Part 2.
The culminating sound of the audience’s cheer, applause and tears is a perfect accompaniment to this wickedly good musical. Go experience it in theaters!
